300+ km/h Quadcopter Speed Drone
A 3D-printed quadcopter built for top speed from stock 5" parts, with GPS onboard for future autonomous flight. I designed the airframe in SolidWorks around the electronics and camera, then simulated airflow in OpenFOAM from −4° to 13° and 10 to 100 m/s to compare four fuselage shapes. I soldered all the electronics and tuned it in ArduPilot.
- 312 km/h GPS top speed on the third flight (172 km/h on the maiden, at 48% throttle)
- 880 g printed in PLA
- Peak L/D of 9.1 at 5°, and passively pitch-stable
- 1.0 kW needed at 300 km/h against 3.4 kW installed, so propeller pitch, not drag, sets the ceiling
